Here are some style options.

I do styles #1and 8 quite often. The styles start at about 3:10.

I do the first style in this video quite often too. I use a ponytail holder, because ratting to finish the braid does not work for my hair.

I just pinned this, so I haven't tried any of these yet.

If you have thin-ish hair like me, your hair will look nothing like it does in
this video. On my thin-ish hair, I prefer to do a regular french braid
instead of a dutch braid.

Here is a braid where you take a small section of hair and
pull then around the other hair before you add it into your French braid.

This is another favorite of mine. It looks complicated, but it is just a regular braid. Then you hold one of the three pieces and slide the other two strands up the braid. Easy.

This style is done in the same way as the one above, but with four
strands. If that seems too difficult for you, you can do it with three strands
and it will look almost the same.

I do the ponytail version of this one quite often too. I skip the teasing at the crown. I know, I know. This is not a braid, it is a series of knots. I wanted to post it here anyway. :)

I'll be perfectly honest. The reason I've taken so long to write a post on clipping is that I can't figure out how to clip. It could be because my hair is very fine and thin. It could be operator error. Clips flop over or slide down the length of my hair. Or if clipping does work, I get unnatural looking volume. I have never tried the Deva clips, which are larger then other clips that shape. Deva clips are closer to the size of duckbill clips. Deva clip may work for me, but I have my doubts.

There are other women on the Wavy Hair Community that have clipping down pat. They mix several of these methods on different parts of their hair to get their hair flowing in the right direction and achieve great volume. I'm amazed at their mix of engineering and artistry. Anyway, here are a bunch of clipping videos.
Roller Clamps. Here is a Frizz Off roller clamp video. You can find roller clamps other places, but you want to look for ones with a curved shape, so they don't crush your waves. I've also seen people use large octopus clamps or curved jaw clamps. I think most people use these types of clips just on the roots, like the video below and don't gather up all their hair into a clip like in the video in the linked above.
Start this video at 5:30 to see how to use the roller clamps.
Update: I have finally found a method of clipping that works for me. This is the method I learned from stylist Emily Kleinsorge of Lucy Skyrocket Hair Salon in Austin Texas.
Here is the story behind the name change.

My sister and I started the Curly Girl Method at the same time. I had lots of time to research it. She had a baby, was moving, and fixing up the new and old home so she was too busy to read anything. I bookmarked everything so she could read it later. When I was posting on Curl Talk, I'd often add one of my bookmarked links to a post. This earned me the nickname The Wavy Librarian, which I think is a pretty awesome nickname. Unfortunately, naming the blog The Wavy Library didn't occur to me until yesterday. Well, better late then never. Tangle Braid and Tangle Low Ponytail were "invented" by my sister. We are both sure she isn't the first one to invent Tangle Braid. We are sure it exist already under another name. If you know what the actual name for this braid is, please let me know. Above is a picture of my sister with a Tangle Braid. Below is a picture if her with Tangle Low Ponytail. Tangle Braid can be left as is (show above). You can add a ponytail holder to finish it off. Or, you can bobby pin the ends under the braid.
Here is my video Youtube tutorial I filmed on how to do tangle braid. If your hair is very tangled, you do not have to actually section your hair. You can just grab tangled clumps that are in the general area you would want the sections to be. The beauty of tangle braid is that it works on hair that is already tangled. It is great for when you are out in the world and your hair has turned into a tangled mess and you need to do something with it.

Some people were confused about what exactly was happening with the "braid". My hands are in the way in the video, so it isn't that easy to see. Here are some visual aids I made. Just ignore what is written in pen, the demo didn't work as I originally envisioned. I tried to demonstrate the entire braid with yarn, but that just looked like a big ole pile of yarn.

If you have a large tangled clump, you can just make a hole in it and skip to the blue thread looping shown in pic 4.
If not, cross the strands/clumps that you have pulled straight back from the bang area.

Cross the sections/clumps a second time.

Pull the next section (blue yarn) through the "hole" you created. Only pull this section/clump part way through the "hole". This creates a loop (blue yarn). You will pull the next section through this loop.

The next section/clump (dark blue) is pulled through the loop you just created (light blue loop). Again, only pull the new section (dark blue) through part way to create a new loop. Continue doing this until you get to your last section/clump of hair. The last section of hair will be pulled all the way through the loop.
"Received an email today from someone in need of products for her
"extremely kinky hair." Excited at the prospect, i replied, "send me
pix, i'd love to help!" OMG...she had STRAIGHT hair, a tiny limp...just
lots of frizz. Not really CURLY HAIR..."
Several wavies got offended by this. Straight, frizzy hair is wavy hair with few exceptions. (Damaged straight hair can be frizzy. Straightened curly hair can be frizzy.) I would expect the person who answers e-mails and gives product advice would know this basic fact about wavy hair. I guess not. The woman who wrote in most likely has wavy hair that might actually benefit from their products. Kinky hair can mean type 4 hair. It can also mean hair that narrows and widens at the hair shaft or has torsion twists. This can occur on any hair type. 40% of my wavy hair is kinky. Are their products not for tiny limp hair? Are they only for thick hair? I can't imagine how the woman who wrote in must feel having the gist of her e-mail made public, having the company publicly insult her hair, having the company make her look foolish, and then having the company make a joke at her expense. In my humble opinion that is exceptionally unprofessional behavior.

Several wavies were offended and commented on this post on the CURLS Facebook page. (link to the post above) Instead of recognizing that what they did was offensive and taking the post down, they chose to defend it. Not only did they defend the post, the defended the disparaging comments about the customer who wrote to them. Then, they deleted the critical comments made by posters and blocked them from the site. Here are some examples of the comments that were deleted. I'm sure you will agree that they are not rude.

The first comments from A are not an exact quote. They are reconstructed from her memory. The other comments are taken either from screen captures or the commenter made a copy of their comment. "A" was one of the first people to have her comments deleted. She did not know she would need to make a record of her comments. There were more similar comments from other posters that were also deleted.
A's comments were deleted and she was blocked.
I have and use curls products, does this mean since i
am a wavy and not a "true" curly, that i should discontinue use of your
products? Shall i stop recommending them to other WAVIES?
Lots of wavies use ethnic hair care products because they DO work for
us.
I really liked the products, but i guess i won't be re-purchasing.

A posted in response to comments about the above post:

For the record, I do "get" the post. I just think
it's inappropriate.
Many wavies spend their lives believing they have "frizzy" "wonky"
straight hair. But with the right products and techniques, they can into
beautiful ringlets. Maybe we don't have the same problems as "true"
curlies, but we have our own set of unique problems that are not the
issues of straight hair.
I think it's bad business to not educate yourself on these issues and the
potential benefit of your products for this hair type.

J's comments were deleted and and she was blocked.
"The word "kinky" has different meanings in different countries/cultures/ethnic groups. To Caucasians in the UK it means hair that appears neither straight or properly wavy, just unruly or wonky or cowlicks. Most of the time that is wavy hair that is treated badly, especially if there is a lot of frizz. I can EASILY get my 2c ringlets to look straight but poofy/fluffy/frizzy with shampoo and brushing. I've even seen 3a Caucasians be able to achieve the same. Shame on you for being publicly RUDE about a potential customer and so lacking in knowledge of the behavior of hair with weaker curl patterns."
J also commented:
"CURLS says frizzy and straight, anyone in the wavy community will tell you that doesn't exist in nature- it is either totally fried hair or the vast majority of the time, hidden wave. Of course we know our own hair type, just as you know yours."

H's comments were deleted and she was blocked:
"Why does it matter so much that she had straight hair or that she described it as extremely kinky? She clearly wanted to try something to help with the frizz. Moisture often helps tame frizz, and your products aim to hydrate hair and minimize frizz. Your company is called CURLS, but under the label it is still a conditioner or a cleanser or a styling product.

My friends daughter "loves" your products, and her hair is straighter then mine. She swims a lot and she sometimes dyes her hair, so it gets frizzy and dry from that, and your products help her hair regain moisture and strength. They are a treat for her when her hair needs help. Should she stop buying them because her hair is straight? Are you so curl snobby Clique-y as to want to cut off potential customers by saying your products don't work on their hair (which is a stupid thing to say)? Why not let them buy and decide for themselves?

The bigger issue with this post is the attitude toward the customer and the fact that the thoughts were aired publicly like this. It's highly unprofessional and gives your company a bad image that you talk bad about customers/potential customers. It is also bad form to ban A- and delete her comments. I saw nothing overly rude. It shows how petty you really are. It's your page and you can do what you like, but this outward persona doesn't look good from a customer service stand point. Why you choose to stand and defend this post to the point of losing customers is beyond me. It clearly hit a nerve with some people, so the gracious and courteous thing to do would be to say "I'm sorry if this post was in poor taste or offended people." and then remove it and be done with it."

H also wrote:
"I, for one, would like to see the picture
of said straight hair. Wavy texture is pretty much everything between
straight and curly hair. It can have very loose and light waves to
deeper waves and some spirals. But again, the name CURLS on the bottle
is just marketing. All the little sub groups like the ones for kids have
identical ingredients listings, just different bottles. And cost less,
and they work the same too. So underneath the label, it's just shampoo
and conditioner and some stylers marketed to ethnic hair. If you go into
a LUSH store, they'll still sell you Curly Wurly even if your hair
isn't curly, but because they think the ingredients might be beneficial.
They've never said, I can't sell you this because you don't have curly
hair. Banning multiple people and deleting posts is just bad business,
in addition to talking bad about a potential customer. I'm done with
this brand, and will help spread the word that the CURLS brand is an
elitist company so prejudice against anything but true curly hair
(whatever that means) even if your website is more inclusive. Curl
patterns can very, but hair properties are the biggest indicators on how
to take care of it."

And H wrote:
"Kinky hair and curly hair are not the same. Hair can be both kinky and curly, but one does not always include the other.
The Natural Haven: Curly vs. Kinky: What's the Difference?
I have fine wavy hair that has some individually kinky strands, if you look at straight texture on the strand, but my hair is definitely not curly. It is wavy, which is neither straight nor curly...it is in between."
I've been silently following this mess and I'm honestly shocked and
appalled at the way the whole situation was handled. I'm sure at some
point all of us have been guilty of saying or posting something that
unintentionally upset and offended someone (or in this case, a large
group of people). Had you simply apologized and removed the original
post, we wouldn't still be having this discussion. But instead, you
chose to hide/delete the comments pointing out that the post was
(unintentionally) offensive to some people and then create an additional
post essentially implying that these people are unable to handle "open
banter." In the end, it wasn't about the post itself; it was about the
perceived self-righteous response that followed. Please keep this in
mind when the dust settles. I spent 10 years in customer service related
fields, and I never would have dreamed of letting my ego cause this
much bad publicity (and please know that this has definitely resulted in
bad publicity for your company, as many of the deleted posts and
responses have already made their way to other forums, which is how I
found out about it in the first place)."

"Possibly I am misunderstanding yesterday's post. The way I understand it, I customer wrote in to you for help. You then publicly shamed her for not using kinky in the way you think it is defined. You further insulted her hair by calling it strait, frizzy, limp, and tiny. Then you posted the curly hair problem "people calling their frizzy hair curly". Many wavy haired people took offense to this, because wavy hair looks strait and frizzy when not properly cared for. Mine looked straight and frizzy before I knew how to care for it. When people posted that the were in fact offended, you deleted their comments and banned them. Rather then just saying "our bad" and taking the post down, you continued to defend this post. You even defended your 6th grade mean girl comments about the hair of the customer who wrote in for help. Is there any part so far that I have wrong? I don't think so. I don't understand why you think it is O.K. to poke fun at this customer in a public forum. Can you explain that to me? Also, I don't understand why it is O.K. to poke fun at wavy hair (A.K.A frizzy, straight hair. Nearly all "frizzy, straight hair" is actually wavy). When people online or in life poke fun at other hair textures I set them straight and tell them it is not O.K. to say such things. I would not tell the people who had to hear the offensive comments to just calm down. I would stand up for them. If you could explain why it is O.K. for your company to poke fun at wavy hair, I'd be interested in hearing that too. I await your response."
pix, i'd love to help!" OMG...she had STRAIGHT hair, a tiny limp...just
lots of frizz. Not really CURLY HAIR..."

A FEW THINGS....

1. No where did we reference race (African American, Caucasian, Latina,
or Asian). We speak in the terms of texture, not race.
2. The
person's hair is straight (no waves, curls, or kinks) with frizz and
damage to her cuticle from bleaching and heat styling.
3. The person is NOT on Facebook. The person's name and picture was not and will NOT be posted/shared.
4. The person referenced asked for product advise, for her hair, and
received a few product recommendations, that would truly benefit her.
She was appreciative that she received honest help vs. selling her on a
line that wasn't created for her.
5. CURLS caters to all textured
hair....from the loosest wave to the kinkiest kink and everything in
between. While some products (e.g. our cleansers and conditioners) can
be used by anyone...we don't cater to this market.
6. CURLS does not discriminate based on color of one's skin or texture of hair.
7. Our Facebook page is here to help those with (or caring for) wavy,
curly, and kinky hair. CURLS is a resource in time of need. Our Facebook
page is a place to congregate, engage, and chat about all things hair
and lifestyle.
8. We aren't a resource for straight hair, it isn't
our speciality. Our straight hair counterparts have the entire hair
care section, while us textured tresses have a fraction of it. We cater
to an overlooked audience.
9. We will remove anyone that is rude, uses harsh language, or insults my staff, my brand, or myself. NO questions asked.
10. This page is owned by CURLS....our opinions are ours. While we will
never intentionally insult anyone, if the page doesn't fancy
you...unlike the page, and please move on so the rest of us can enjoy.
11. At no time did we insult anyone (or any texture)...not even the rude posters. We expect the same in return.
12. There wasn't an apology because there wasn't an insult. Had I or
my staff insulted someone, there would have been an apology, STAT! We
are human, so mistakes can be made....and we own up to ours.
13.
Lastly....the person that emailed was a Personal Trainer i was referred
to. During our conversation she found out what i do, and said she, too,
had kinky, curly hair. She emailed the picture before our first
meeting. I let her know that her hair was simply damaged from bleaching
and wasn't kinky in texture. It was frizzy and damaged and needed a
lil TLC and no more bleaching. I showed her a picture of truly kinky
hair, we shared a laugh and I advised her on how she could get her silky
straight tresses back. We moved on to getting me in the best shape as
possible!

Now...may we move on to the next topic? We have too much to chat about!"
The first video on this post gives a tutorial for french and dutch braiding, if you would like one.

The french rope braid. Much easier then a french braid, but still looks complicated.

I don't know the proper name for this, but I call it a two strand twist headband. It is like a french rope braid where you twist as you go. This makes a more substantial "braid" then a traditional french braid. Substantial is good if you have thin hair. :) This style works on chin length hair and possibly shorter. Another beautiful preview pic of me. *sigh*

Tangle Braid, easier then a french braid. This style is one "invented" by my sister (We are sure she isn't the first to invent this.) She calls it Tangle Braid because she does it when she is out and about and the weather has killed her hair. Because you can section hair in larger sections then French braid, it works well on tangled hair. Thus, the name tangle braid. Click to see my blog post on Tangle Braid with a visual aid.

The following braids are all equal to or harder then a french braid (to me). The first two knot braids however are a little easier then a french braid.

Waterfall twist. This one works for shorter layers. It was about the same level of difficulty as a french braid (to me).

Waterfall Braid. I can do this on someone else's hair, but get confused doing this on my own hair. Advanced level braiding.

The Knot Braid Updo was a little easier french braiding. The second video is the same as the first in this group, the "braid" just starts higher on the head. The second video has clearer directions. You must cross the hair with the correct strand on top, pull the correct strand through, and twist the strands the right way for each side. The last version is easier then the first two. I still have to concentrate to make sure I keep knotting in the same direction.

"Braiding" starts 1 minute into this video.

This is another version, the Knotted Headband. I kept getting confused on this one. This is more difficult then the two above. Mine did not look nice and neat like the one in the video. :(

Bobby Pinning 101

Bobby Pinning 201-pin invisibility and how to fix the wonky bits with bobby pins.

The bobby pin trick (from me). It is a way to hide the bobby pins in your hair. I only look like I'm on drugs, I swear. Sheesh, what a bad preview pic.

Get your bangs out of your face with hidden bobby pins.

Me showing the bobby pin trick I learned from my sister, who learned it from someone else. I didn't have pink eye, that is just an effect I managed to create with my eye shadow. :(
Skip to 1:45. Cute retro way to put the sides up with a bobby pin.

A good strategy for pinning up wavy hair. Put the pin in halfway down your hair and then pin that to your head.

Cute bohemian braids. Most are super simple, but look complicated. Some are just braiding with unequal sections of hair.

Twisty braid. Just a bunch of twisting.

Not really a braid. This takes several ponytail holders.

3D Split Braid. You spit the outer section. Bring the middle section between the split outer section. Recombine the outer section to become the new middle section.

This one looks complicated, but it isn't. You split the ponytail and do two rope braids. Then you twist those rope braids together.

The Fake Pony Tail for days when you are out and about and the weather has killed your hair. It requires a few bobby pins.

The Stacked Ponytail (by me). It looks more put together then a regular pony tail. Your hair only has to be long enough for the front section of your hair to reach to the back center bottom.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFtQmTIC4bg

Not Just a Ponytail. A good one for work.

How to do a perfect ponytail. The "mohawk" section is left out, teased slightly, and then added to the ponytail. A piece of hair is wrapped around to hide the band.

Organic ponytail for longer hair. This does not require a ponytail holder, so it is good for when you are out and your hair needs to be up NOW.

Flip through ponytail or topsytail ponytail and some variations.

Side ponytail

Side ponytail with the Goody Twisty Comb for short hair (It's me). You can use ponytail holder instead. Watch at 2:15 for the trick to get your shorter layers to stay.

My hair is longer then it has ever been (which is still not long at all).Pedahehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14937526604196466581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329460384522727442.post-6722482568771045752013-08-05T07:05:00.000-07:002013-08-05T07:05:00.815-07:00GoosefootPrints Hair Analysis with My Analysis Results

This analysis was provided to me free of charge. Feel free to skip down to my sample hair analysis report if you aren’t interested in my musings. In addition to the report below, you will also receive a document that helps you interpret your results.

So, last year the owner of Goosefootprints on Etsy needed some fine porous hair to experiment on. She tests hair in her spare time when she is not working as a scientist. (Some people crochet...) Hey! I have fine, porous hair! So I sent her some. Since she had my hair, she analyzed it for me and took some cool pictures under a microscope (see below) and she sent me a report about my hair. (Some people collect stamps...) I also had my mom send her some hair, so she could experiment on medium-coarse hair with low porosity. Well, if I did hair analysis, I’d be fired. My mom’s hair is fine-medium and porous, so I was way off in my “analysis”. Since then, I stopped giving my mom “helpful” advice on how to treat her “coarse, non porous” hair. *smacks head*

Fast forward to last week. People on the Wavy Hair Community were discussing a place that does hair analysis for $85. I was joking that I think I owed her some money. Well...yada, yada, yada...no, no,you should totally do it...messages back and forth...she decided to start a hair analysis business on ETSY. Woo-hoo! The report below is a report on my hair, and you can get a similar one about your hair if you order from Goosefootprints on Etsy. The best part? Only $22. No, I think the actual best part is having cool pictures of your hair under a microscope. That is pretty darned awesome! But wait, there’s more. Not only do you get this uber cool report with pictures, you also get a 9 page document that explains the science behind your hair, why certain things work for certain hair types, and all about hair product ingredients. Plus, you get a chart that shows you which product ingredients will work for your hair type. That’s 10 whole pages of solid hair info, people!

Seriously though, I think this is a great service that gives you the information you need to know about your hair and hair in general. I highly recommend it. My sister's reaction was that if this existed when she started Curly Girl, she could have saved 3 years of experimenting with all the wrong products -- which cost far more than $22! The documents that come with this report helps you to apply the results of the analysis to your haircare. I have fine hair, so I just check the section with fine hair to learn how to treat it. There are similar sections about kinking, pH, etc. The hair analysis below is just the icing. The cake is the accompanying documents from GoosefootPrints.

The Analysis

Hair Analysis Results For:

Pedaheh

Hair strand thickness: Fine
25% is very fine, 35% is fine, the remaining 40% is medium - but most hairs are at the finer end of the medium range.

Key for strand thickness:
Very fine hair: Less than or equal to 40 microns
Fine hair: 40-60 microns
Medium hair: 60-80 microns
Coarse hair Greater than 80 microns
1 micron = 0.001 millimeters

Hair elasticity dry: Normal
Hairs stretched between 20% to 35%

Hair elasticity wet: Normal to low
Your
hairs stretched between 28% to 40% of original length, so there is
quite a bit of variability - you have a mixture of normal elasticity and
low elasticity hairs.

"Normal" dry elasticity is the ability to stretch 20-30% of original length
"Normal" wet elasticity is the ability to stretch 50% of original length

Porosity: Normal to porous
Your
hairs vary from normal porosity to porous, with only slightly
increasing porosity from root to ends. Kinking adds increased porosity.
In some cases, there is normal-porosity hair immediately next to a
microscopic kink upon which there are many more broken cuticles. The
kinking on your hairs, where it occurred, is microscopic and can occur
as frequently as 0.4 mm apart (0.015 inches apart). Those hairs feel
bumpy. When it occurred less frequently (and in finer hairs) the hair
feels mostly smooth and slippery with just a few bumpy places.

Porosity is determined visually.
Low
porosity: Hair with cuticles intact when viewed face-on and with
cuticles overlapping snugly when viewed on the edge of the hair.
Normal
porosity: Takes into account normal wear and tear. Viewed face-on there
are chipped cuticles with rare small gaps, rare cracks. Viewed from the
edge, cuticles look like shingles on a roof with few flaring or jagged
("raised") looking cuticle scales.
Porous: Many chipped, broken
or missing cuticle scales. Cracks may be present and frequent. Viewed on
the edge, cuticles can be seen flaring out at the ends or standing away
from the hair.

Kinking: Kinking is present. 40%
of the hairs examined had microscopic and some macroscopic (visible to
the naked eye) kinks of the narrowing and also twisting type. This
kinking is significant enough to add porosity to your otherwise healthy
hair.

pH: Because you said you occasionally use
citric acid rinses, I tested your hairs in a citric acid and distilled
water solution at 2 concentrations: 1/4 teaspoon citric acid in 1 cup of
water
(pH 2-2.5) and 1/8 teaspoon citric acid in 1 cup of water (pH 3). At
the higher concentration, the hair began to show signs of acid moving
into the hair (see photo) and more swelling than in water alone. The
lesser concentration had a lesser effect.
You might consider reducing the amount of citric acid in your rinses if it will still give you the desired result.
I
also tested your hair in a solution of 1 tablespoon baking soda per cup
of water, pH 8. Your hair responded dramatically to this! Swelling was
pronounced, cuticles were clearly lifted away as a result and bubbles
were evolving from the hair, which is common when hair is placed in
too-high pH - that high pH solution is diffusing in and proteins and
lipids are going out into the baking soda solution.
A gel by any other name...might smell slightly different, but is still the same gel.

Over at the Wavy Hair Community, we discovered something. Aussie Instant Freeze Gel, Aussie Awesome Volume Gel, Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel, and Pantene Smooth Definition Hair Gel are all virtually the same gel. I put the ingredients that are different in the formulas in bold print. These ingredients are mostly just extracts, which generally don't do much. Three of the four look alike gels list panthenol as the very last ingredient. Other then fragrance, all the ingredients not in bold are exactly the same and listed in the same order.

Aussie Instant Freeze Gel: water, laureth 23, ppolyquaternium 4, hydroxyethylcellulose, benzyl
alcohol, acrylates/beheneth 25 methacrylate copolymer, aminomethyl
propanol, dmdm hydantoin, acrylates copolymer, fragrance, disodium edta,
prunus serotina bark extract (wild cherry), humulus lupulus extract
(hops), hedychium coronarium root extract (australian white ginger),
Aussie Awesome Volume Gel: Water, Laureth 23, Polyquaternium 4, Hedychium Coronarium Extract
Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel: Water, Laureth 23, Polyquaternium 4, Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf/Stem Extract,
Pantene Smooth Definition Hair Gel: Water, Laureth 23, Polyquaternium 4, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Benzyl

Fragrance, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Panthenol

Proctor and Gamble owns the brands Herbal Essences, Aussie, and Pantene. This isn't the first time these companies have produced look alike products. They've done it with mousse.
Curl Talk Thread on look alike mousse. See posts 21 &25 on page 2.
And they have done it with conditioner.
Beauty Brains: Are you cheated when the company sells you the same product under a different name?
If you like a product from Aussie, Herbal Essences, or Pantene, you may want to check the other brands to see if they have the same formulation for less or with a scent you prefer. If there is a product you hate, make sure you aren't buying it again under another name.

Since I did start a channel, I plan to have some videos that don't relate to wavy hair care. I'll have nail polish videos, do some updos, maybe some make-up stuff, and whatever floats my boat. I hope you like my channel. I have a few videos uploaded already if you want to check them out.
Thanks to all the members of the Wavy Hair Community who gave me input on this post.

Diagnosing your hair is a tricky business, but at some point we all will have to do it. I recommend that people do not use cones in the beginning stages of CG until you get to know your hair. Using cones just gives you one more variable to consider when diagnosing hair. It is complicated enough when you are learning to read your hair without the extra variable.

Smart people introduce one product at a time. That way if there is a problem, it is easier to figure out what caused it. I have a bad habit of trying several things at one time. Do as I say, not as I do.

Change in Dew Points
Your very first question when diagnosing hair should always be "Have my dew points changed recently?". You may be suddenly getting frizz because you are using products with glycerin and the dew points changed from normal to high. Or, you may have dry hair because your dew points suddenly dropped to low and you need more moisturizing products.

Over Conditioned:
If you your hair is over conditioned it may be very soft, mushy, gummy, dull, flyaway, lacking bounce, the bottom half of your waves may lack definition. Your waves will be weak, sad, and wimpy. This link has a pic of over conditioned hair (needing protein). Over conditioned hair streeeeeeeeeetches in the stretch test but does not return to it's original shape. I've heard over conditioned hair described as cotton candy hair. I have no idea what that means, but I imagine if you have cotton candy hair, you know it.

HOW TO FIX IT: Use only minimum moisture to detangle and use more protein, do more PTs until you are back to normal. A sulfate wash may speed things along.

Too much protein:
Hair is straw-like, rough and brittle. Unlike hair that needs moisture, when hair has too much protein it feels hard, especially when wet. This link has a pic of hair with too much protein. In some cases hair gets straighter with too much protein and possibly very soft. It may feel greasy.

HOW TO FIX IT: Do deep treatment. Avoid protein and keep adding moisture until your hair is back to normal.

Dry, needs moisture:
It is dry, straw-like, rough and brittle.Dry hair is very dull. Lack of moisture causes frizz, especially in the outer layers. Hair that lacks moisture does not stretch and breaks quickly in the stretch test (Hair that needs protein will also break quickly in the stretch test.) Your hair may not clump well, lack definition, and tangle easily.

Did you recently add a new product that might be drying your hair? Ingredients that can cause dryness include, but aren't limited to: Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) drying alcohols (like the kind in hairspray), and ACV rinses. Most hairsprays and mousses can be drying. Glycerin and other humectants can be drying in low dews.

HOW TO FIX IT: Deep Treatments, lots of moisture. Stop using any products that are drying hair. See my post on how to deal with dry hair.

Needs protein:
Limp curls that lack bounce. Waves that don't seem to be able to support themselves. Your hair may be frizzy, lack shine, lack definition, and may not clump properly. <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id=".reactRoot[11].[1][2][1]{comment353298448096602_353304088096038}..[1]..[1]..[0].[0][2]"> Hair that needs protein will break quickly in the stretch test. (Hair that needs moisture will also break in the stretch test.) When hair needs protein, it snaps <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id=".reactRoot[11].[1][2][1]{comment353298448096602_353304088096038}..[1]..[1]..[0].[0][2]">when you pull your fingers through it, even though you are using plenty of conditioner/moisturizing ingredients.
.
HOW TO FIX IT: Do protein treatments and/or add protein to your daily routine.

Needs Protein and Moisture.
Keep in mind that your hair may be low on both protein AND moisture, especially in the beginning stages of CG. It might not be either/or, it could be both.

Product build up:
If your hair has product build up it has frizz that looks like you rubbed your hair with a balloon or stuck your finger in a light socket. Your hair looks heavy and coated and has a fake shine. It looks wet when dry. It is limp and weighed down. It may look dull. Product build up tends to show up slowly after the addition of a new product.
Even if you only use CG products, you can get build up. What will cause build up on your hair may not build up on other people. Conditioner can adsorb (stick) to the outside of hair and build up. Other things that can build up include, but aren't limited to silicones, polyquats, aloe, shea, jojoba oil, castor oil, mineral oil, and petrolatum.

HOW TO FIX IT: If the build up is waxy build up or hard water build up, an apple cider vinegar rinse or citric acid rinse will remove the build up. If you don't normally low poo, try a low poo. If you low poo on a regular basis, use a sulfate shampoo to reset your hair. Some people find they need to continuously rotate products to prevent product build up.

Hard Water Build Up- An ACV rinse or a Citric acid rinse will remove some hard water build up. To remove lots of hard water build up, you will need a cheleating shampoo. Cheleating shampoos usually say "hard water" or "swimmer's" on the name or label. They usually contain EDTA. Swimmers and Hard Water shampoos are most often sulfate shampoos. I use the Ion Hard Water shampoo once a month. It is technically a low poo, but contains C 14-16 Olefin Sulfate, which some find to be as harsh or worse then any sulfate.
The Long Hair Community link appears to be broken. From what I can remember (I haven't read it in years), it suggested you do a single sulfate wash, don't use conditioner, and then access your hair's condition. I'll leave the link here in case there it is just temporarily broken. Ingredient lists online are often incorrect because they are rarely updated. Make sure you double check the label on the bottle before you buy it. Drugstore.com, Walgreens.com and CVS.com are websites that have ingredient lists posted. Another option is to do a search for Name of Product and the word Ingredients.

What is this ingredient?
You can do a google search for the name of the ingredient and that should give you the answer to what it does. Or, this link lists ingredients found in hair care products in their respective categories.

Check to make sure you aren't buying a base with fragrance added.
If you are buying a product from an ETSY seller or a small online business, make sure you aren't paying a premium for a premixed base with some fragrance added. In 2010 some of the smart wavies and curlies on NC.com figured out that many of the products they were buying from online sellers were premixed bases with much higher prices. One woman found she had purchased the same exact base under different names from different sellers. These threads are old, but they give you some examples of what I'm talking about.
Hair Products and their Bases (list many products and their equivalent bases)
Essential Wholesale Co-op (see post # 2, it lists a few products and their corresponding bases)
This thread was known to me as Duchess of Curls Gate. Duchess of Curls, a popular curl enhancer at the time, currently sells for $15 for 8oz. It is Essential Wholesale Simple Aloe Jelly with some lavender added. The Essential Wholesale base sells for 16oz for $7.40 or $14.65 for a half gallon. So, for slightly less money, you can get a half gallon instead of 8 oz and then add your own lavender scent.
To make sure you are not paying too much for a repackaged base, do a google search for your product's ingredients and see what pops up. If you find many other products and/or a ingredient supply website, the product is probably a premixed base. You may be willing to pay more for the convenience of a smaller bottle, but you should know what your options are.

Same Product Different Name
Keep an eye out for lookalike products. The lookalikes are likely to come from hair companies owned by the same parent company (like Proctor and Gamble). You don't want to have a product not work for your hair and then buy the same product again with different herbal extracts added. Here are two links that have examples.

Salon vs. Drugstore
If you read the labels, you will find that the ingredients in salon products sound about the same as the ones in drugstore products. Yes, formulation can make a difference, but IMHO you are usually paying for marketing when you buy a salon product. Pedahehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14937526604196466581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329460384522727442.post-86175661134101341602012-09-29T06:49:00.000-07:002013-04-10T07:41:48.868-07:00How to Read the Label: Part 1Unfortunately reading ingredients labels isn't always as straight forward as it seems. I do want to restate that I'm not an ingredients expert. I don't have a chemistry degree. I only know what I've read on the internet.

The first thing you should know is the ingredients are listed in descending order on the back of a bottle. (at lest in theory, more on this later) The first ingredient listed is the ingredient there is the most of, and the last ingredient listed is the ingredient there is the least of.

The first five ingredients.
The first five ingredients will make up most of the product. In conditioner, shampoo, and leave-in conditioner, water makes up 50-80% of the product. If the first ingredient isn't water, be very suspicious of the product label's accuracy. If water were not the first ingredient in a conditioner, it would look and feel very different then your average conditioner.. If you consider your product is mostly water, there isn't a lot of room left for other ingredients. (see the first link) The first five ingredients make up the loin's share of your bottle. Do you count the water when you count the first five ingredients? Some say yes and some say no. I really don't know if you should count it or not.
The Natural Haven: Why do the first five ingredients on a hair product matter?

Locate the preservative and fragrance on the label.
Scan
the ingredient list for fragrance and for the ingredient that is the
preservative. Anything listed after fragrance or the preservative will
be a very small amount. If the fancy
ingredient you are eying is listed after the preservative or fragrance,
it is just a marketing ploy.

A list of preservatives is found in this link. The link lists ingredients commonly found in hair care products.

Butyl paraben, Diazolidinyl urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Ethyl paraben, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Isobutyl paraben, Methyl paraben, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Phenoxyethanol, Propyl paraben, Sodium benzoate

Now I'm going to begin to
talk about how labels sometimes lie or fudge the truth. This includes
products from national companies that are sold in big stores like Target
and Walmart.

The Case of Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition (and lots products from other brands)
Charged with: Front of the bottle claims not matching the ingredient list in the way you expect.

Let's look at Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Conditioner (old formula, no longer CG).

Ingredients

Water, cetearyl alcohol, palm oil, behentrimonium chloride, apple fruit
extract, glycerin, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, niacinamide,
pyridoxine hci, shea butter, citric acid, olive fruit oil, sugar cane
extract, benzyl alcohol, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, avocado oil,
black currant seed oil, linalool, lemon peel extract, CI 19140, camellia
sinensis leaf extract, CI 15985, parfum.

The front label says "with olive, avocado, and shea". These are listed 12th, 14th, and 18th on the label. There isn't a whole lot of these ingredients in there. This old formula was a good product, but it wasn't the olive, avocado, and shea that made it great. It was more likely the cetearyl alcohol, palm oil, and behentrimonium chloride that made it awesome. Cetearyl alcohol, palm oil, and behentrimonium chloride doesn't sound special or sexy on the front label. "Olive, avocado and shea" is just a marketing ploy.

A similar case is Burt's Bees Avocado Butter Pre Shampoo Treatment. According to the link below, the product is less then 1% Avocado Oil, so naming it Avocado Butter is just marketing. It is common that the ingredient mentioned on the front of the label isn't high on the ingredient list. Always look at the back of the bottle.
The Beauty Brains? Should You Pre-poo with Burt's Bees?

The case of Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle and Rose Conditioner
Charged with: Making up names for ingredients

The rules are you have to list ingredients individually by their correct names. You aren't allowed to put some ingredients together, make up a name for them, and then put your made up name on the label. For example, I couldn't mix water, cetearyl alcohol, and behentrimonium methosulfate and name the mixture "super natural mix 2000". Then I could not list the first ingredient in my conditioner as "super natural mix 2000". Aubrey Organics did this for years and years on the label of Honeysuckle and Rose Conditioner (they fixed the label this spring). Their "super natural mix 2000" was called "coconut fatty acid cream base" and was listed as such on the label to make their conditioner appear more natural to the consumer. Keep in mind when reading the ingredients below that most likely the formula has not changed (or not changed very much), only the way they list the ingredients. Here are the two ways they were listed.

Old label:
Coconut Fatty Acid Cream Base, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice, Shea Butter (Butyrospermum
Parkii) (Organic), Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Germ) Oil, Jojoba Oil
(Organic), Rosa Mosqueta (Organic), Rosa Canina (Rose Hip) Seed Oil,
Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) Extract, Hops, Balm Mint (Melissa
Officinalis) Extract, Mistletoe (Viscum Album), Chamomila Recuita
(Matricaria) Flower Extract, Yarrow, Chrysanthemum, Angelica,
Forsythia, Honeysuckle Oil, Carrot (Daucus Carota) Oil, Aubrey's
Preservative (Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamin A, C, E)

New label:
Agua, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cetyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis, Glyceryl Linoleate, Glycerin, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Germ) Oil, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Oil)*, Rosa Moschata Oil* (Rosa Mosqueta,
Rose Hip Oil), Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel), Humulus Lupulus Extract,
(Hops), Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint) Extract, Viscum Album
(Mistletoe), Anthemis Nobilis Extract (Roman Camomile), Achillea
Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract, Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew)
Extract, Angelica Acutiloba (Japanese Angelica) Extract, Forsythia
Suspensa Fruit Extract, Magnolia Biondii (Magnolia)Extract, Lonicera
Japonica (Honeysuckle) Oil , Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl
Palmitate (Vitamin A), Daucus Carota Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit
Oil), Retinyl Ac
etate (Vitamin A), Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).

The Case of Shea Moisture Moisture Retention Shampoo
Charged With: Not listing all of their ingredients on the label

IMHO, this is the worst crime. One of the ingredients they did not list on the label is the preservative. Preservatives are an ingredient people are likely to be allergic to. When I posted the Beauty Brains link in a thread on Curltalk, a member said (not an exact quote) "that explains why my scalp hated it". Shea Moisture appears to have left the thickener, pearlizer, and preservative off of the ingredient list. I assume they did this to make their product appear more natural then it is, but doing this is dangerous. Shame on them. The link is short and explains this much better then I do.
Beauty Brains: Is Shea Moisture Shampoo Missing Ingredients?

The Case of Several Giovanni Products
Charged with listing ingredients out of order

Giovanni is the formula-changingest company. They are always coming out with new formulas, so I highly doubt this is a current formula for a conditioner.

Conditioner ingredients:
Aqua (Purified Water), Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Oil, Nettle
(Urtica Dioica) Oil, Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris) Oil, Birch Leaf (Butela
Alba) Oil, Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis Flower) Oil, Clary (Salvia
Sclarea), Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), Coltsfoot Leaf (Tussilago
Fargara), Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) Oil, Mallow (Malya Sylvestris),
Horsetail (Equisetum Arvense) Oil, Soybean Protein (Glycine Soja), Cetyl
Alcohol (Plant Derived), Stearalkonium Chloride, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Trace Minerals, Citric Acid (Corn), Sodium Hydromethylglycinate, Grapefruit Seed (Citrus Derived)

If this were the correct formula with the ingredients listed in this order, the product would be unstable. It would be around 70% oil. If there were that much oil in it, it would look significantly different then your average conditioner. Again, read the short link for a better explanation. I'm no chemist.
Beauty Brains: Can You Spot a Natural Product by Reading the Ingredients?

The Case of Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo (and a good percentage of natural product labels)
Charged with: Fudging the ingredient order to look more natural

My personal name for the phenomena is the tea issue. Essentially a manufacturer will make tea and use the tea to make conditioner instead of water. Let's look at Aveda's label:

Shampoo Ingredients:
Aqueous Purified Water Extracts: Camellia Sinensis Extract, Citrus Aurantium Amara Peel Extract (Bitter Orange), Astragalus Root (Membranaceus) Extract (Milk Vetch), Schizandra Chinensis Fruit
Extract, Pinus Tabulaeformis Bark Extract (Pine), Vitis Vinifera Seed
Extract (Grape), Sedum Rosea Root Extract, Rehmannia Chinensis Root
Extract, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate,
Lauramidopropyl Betaine, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Quaternium
80, PEG 7 Dimethicone C8-C18 Ester, Babassuamidopropyl Betaine, Guar
Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Amyl Salicylate, Amyl Cinnamate,
Lycopene, Lecithin, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Tocopherol, Sucrose
Palmitate, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Glycol Stearate, Glycol
Distearate, Polyglyceryl 10 Oleate, Polyquaternium 7, Fragrance, Cistus
Ladaniferus Oil, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Everything listed until the ammonium lauryl sulfate in bold is just tea. The herbal ingredients are basically brewed into the water to make an "herbal tea". Other then the water, these ingredients should be listed at/near the end of the ingredient list. When you count the first five ingredients for a product like this one, water is one and ammonium lauyrl sulfate is two. Skip past the "tea" stuff when counting. If the "tea" ingredients really were 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, etc. you would have a weird consistency. Imagine opening a tea bag and stirring it into water. These companies usually use words like "water with bla bla bla" so they are technically telling the truth, but it is misleading to the uninformed consumer. It makes a product appear more natural then it is.
The first thing you should know is my hair has a short terminal length and grows very slowly. The pics from September 11 are the longest my hair had ever grown before the Curly Girl Method. I've tried to grow long hair several times in my life (At the age of 5, 5th grade, High School, and in my late 20's). In the past, as soon as I could feel my hair start to touch my shoulders, it would break off. My Grandma's had the same issues with her hair. I think my Dad had the same issues with growing his hair in the early 70's, but he refuses to discuss this with me. :) I was hoping with the CG method and my new found knowledge about protein and moisture balance, I could gain some extra length.
What is terminal length? This link explains it in a few paragraphs. If you are too lazy for all that readin', here is a shorter explanation: You know how your hair on your arms only grows so long? It stops because of genetically programmed terminal length. Same goes for the hair on your head. It only grows so long before it won't grow any longer. I'm on the short end of the spectrum, but some people have a very long terminal length for their hair (think Crystal Gayle). My plan was to stop breakage, split ends, etc. so I can retain more of the length my genetically slow growing hair has the ability to grow.
I cut my own hair which is a big part of my successfully growing my hair longer. I trim very small amounts off the ends at one time, like an 1/16-1/8 inch at a time. Doing these micro-trims means I was able to only trim about 3/4 inch total off the length last year. Try to get your stylist to only trim a total of 3/4 inch in a year. Probably not going to happen if you are like me and need 4-5 trims in a year. The bad part of cutting your own hair and only doing small trims is I made a mistake cutting my hair last year (see side pics) and the mistake is still there because I won't cut off enough length to fix it. To do the micro trims I take 1/16-1/8 inch sections of hair and trim 1/16-1/8 inch off the length at a time. (See video at the bottom of the page.) I attack my hair in sections (left front, left back, right front, right back) and use clips to separate trimmed hair and hair that is awaiting a trim. Since I cut very small pieces at one time and make micro trims, it doesn't matter what angle I hold my hair when I make the cut. I pull the back sections toward the front or over the top of my head so I can see them to trim. It takes me about a half hour to do this, but my hair is fine and thin. It will take you longer if you have thick hair.
I think my hair is getting about as long as it can get. My ends don't seem to be in great shape, and I suspect it is going to start breaking soon. But you never know, I thought it wouldn't grow anymore 6 months ago and it did. So maybe there is more length in there yet.
long for its thickness. You can see in the back the bottom layer is very scraggly. It doesn't look as scraggly when I wear it wavy. It is about an inch past arm pit length. Arm pit length was my dream goal length that I never thought I would actually achieve. I toyed with the idea of letting it grow until it was arm pit length when wavy, but that would be a couple more inches when straight. What would be the point when it doesn't look good?
I cut off an inch after taking these photos.
OR My hair hated my first PT.The angels didn't sing for me either the first protein treatment (PT), and my hair loves protein. If nothing bad happened, that is a good sign. If your hair did not like protein, it would feel hard and rough. There is a small percentage of people who's hair feels very soft after a PT and/or gets straighter.

If you did not have a negative reaction:

1)You may need to do more PTs before you start to notice a positive change in your hair. One PT might not have totally taken care of all your hair's protein needs. You might be very low on protein.
2) You may need to leave the PT on longer. Again, you just may need more protein. Leaving a PT on longer will get more protein into your hair.
3)You may need to try a different kind of protein. Soy and wheat protein work for my hair, but collagen is magic. You may need to experiment with different proteins until you find the one that works for you.
Some proteins may work better for your hair then others.

I had a negative reaction. Does that mean I'm protein sensitive?

1) You could be protein sensitive. It could be that protein just isn't for you.
2) Your hair might not have liked the protein in your PT, but will like other types of protein.
3) You might need less protein or a different protein. Ion Effective Care and Aubrey Organics GPB are milder PTs. Keratin and silk proteins are easier for some hair to take.
4) How long did you leave it on? Maybe you need to PT for a shorter time.
5) Did you do a deep treatment (DT)? If you did not do a deep treatment immediately afterward, go do one now. You need moisture to balance the protein. If you only used a rinse out, you might need to do a DT to get more moisture into your hair.
6) There is the rare wavy that likes daily protein in his/her products (gels, leave ins, etc.), but cannot PT. Your hair may freak out after a PT, but love protein otherwise.

Pedahehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14937526604196466581noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329460384522727442.post-47925938643372016772012-07-15T10:35:00.000-07:002013-06-10T18:09:17.307-07:00How to do a Protein TreatmentThe first step is to wash your hair. The protein will penetrate better on very clean hair. If you low poo, it would be a good idea to low poo before a protein treatment. Honestly though, I've washed my hair with a cowash and washed my hair with a low poo before a protein treatment (PT) and I don't notice any difference.

For your first PT, please test a small strand/section of hair. Protein treatments aren't for everyone. It is better to have a small section of hair that is rough and hard and craving moisture that to have a whole head of awful.

After washing, towel dry your hair and add your PT. Towel drying helps prevent the water on your hair from diluting the PT. The longer the PT is on your head, the more protein will penetrate into your hair's cortex. It is best to follow the instructions on the bottle the first time you use that particular PT. After that, you can experiment with leaving a PT on longer, if you think your hair needs more protein. Some people (me) leave PTs on for an hour.

Rinse and towel dry your hair again. At this point, your hair may feel just fine. It may also feel hard and awful. This is also normal. After my first PT, before adding the DT, I thought "Welp, I broke my hair." My hair felt hard and awful. Adding more moisture should make your hair feel nice again. Towel dry your hair and add either a deep treatment (DT) or a moisturizing conditioner. If you add a DT with ingredeints that can penetrate your hair's cortex (coconut oil, olive oil, etc.) you can leave the DT on up to an hour. Rinse and style as usual.

If your hair tends not to need much moisture, and you are using a moisturizing PT (Spiral Solutions Repairing Protein Treatment, Ion Effective Care, etc.) you may not need to follow your PT with a DT. If your hair feels fine after the PT, you are good to go. The first time you try a PT, you should follow with a DT or moisturizing conditioner just in case.

The odd are very good that your hair isn't actually falling out. When you have straight hair and you brush it, shed hairs either end up in your brush or fall out sometime during the day. When you wear your hair wavy or curly, when your hair sheds, it doesn't fall to the ground. The waves/curl in your hair catch the shed hair and hold on to it. When you comb your hair in the shower, you have to manually remove all the hairs that have shed that day(s). Looking at all the hair that has been naturally and normally shed in a day(s) at one time freaks a lot of people out. It just looks like too much hair to loose. My relative jokes that says she removes a barbie doll worth of hair every time she washes it. The odds are your hair isn't thinning. I've been active on curl talk for years and Wavy Hair Community since it started. I've read tons of posts by people alarmed by the amount of shedding. I've never read a single post that said "CG made me bald". Not one. Trust me, if CG made anyone bald, someone would have posted about it. :) Here is a good link that explains the hair growth cycle.

Does your hair actually seem to be getting thinner? When you look at your hair, do you seem to have less hair then you once had? If so, you should see a doctor. Many conditions that can be treated can cause thinning hair. A thyroid condition is one example. If you have old photos of your thicker hair, bring them to your doctor's appointment to show him/her. Hair products will not cause your hair to fall out, unless you are doing something very extreme (think on the lines of a chemical burn, never washing, etc.).
